Of course, some people are hesitant to believe anything without the numbers to support that fact. Hence it seems necessary that one present her/his verifiable numerical findings before making a claim. The statistics with regard to smoking have been released into the public for some time now, and unsurprisingly, they point to the imperative statement: stop smoking.

While, of course, going into the economical value of the tobacco industry will definitely make the reader realize that it is a lucrative business, a quick glance through smoking statistics (or perhaps even just common sense) will prove the habit lethal.

Often, smokers (even those who have already stopped), develop apparent signs of lung cancer at around their middle age years. The actual age bracket is from 40-65, although one must realize that everyone is at risk.

One out of two smokers die because of smoking; the odds of 50/50 are not exactly favorable—why then would anyone take that huge risk? Ninety percent of lung cancer cases is caused by smoking, and of course, most people know that cancer is one of the most elusive of diseases in terms of a full recovery. Men, however, are more prone to the threat of lung cancer. If the slow and painful death of cancer does not sway the urge to light up, perhaps one should also take note of the fact that smoking not only weakens the lungs, but also accounts for 20% of deaths due to heart failure.

In 2002 the World Health Organization released this terrifying statistic: smoking takes the life of one person every eight seconds. Along with that, they also released the fact that 10 million cigarettes are sold every minute. Note that these numbers were crunched 7 years ago; the tobacco industry has not seen a falling trend since then.

To interpret these smoking statistics then: smoking kills, and it doesn’t seem to be taking a break from it anytime soon.
